Erected by the ancients, K'uhul, the sacred standing circle of statues dedicated to the bloodthirsty god Coatlicue has stood sentinel outside the village since time was first recorded. Their mysterious power causes any villager who wanders near the stone guardians to drop their voice to a respectful whisper. At night, brilliant strings of light wind amongst the bases of the statues and strange noises echo from the center of their circle.
Despite the strange behavior of K'uhul, it has remained fairly harmless over the millennia. This changed when two shamans came from the jungle to worship at the feet of the statues.
Bitter rivals, the two shamans made a nuisance of themselves. One shaman believed that the power of the statues coincided with position of the heavenly bodies in the night sky. His opponent staunchly denied this idea, stating that tracing the appropriate runes which decorated the statues held the key to managing the power of K'uhul. In the beginning, their shouting matches would go unnoticed by the villagers, though trouble soon followed when they began to attract disciples from among the young. Heated arguments became commonplace in the streets, eventually erupting into a massive brawl.
The village’s Head Man stepped in and nearly evicted both shamans from the village. However, the shamans convinced the Head Man that they could access Great Powers using their knowledge of K'uhul and make the small village the envy of their neighbors. Torn, the Head Man decided to hold a contest. The first shaman to activate the circle of statues would be awarded the village’s modest riches, sure to double with the power of the statues, while the loser would be sacrificed to placate Coatlicue.
K'uhul is a game where two players use opposing dogmas to attempt to open a gate to unlimited power.
